Why investment in gas research is important
Policy makers need to increase the efforts to break up the boundaries between electricity and gas to enable their maximum joint contribution. “Even after the energy transition, roughly some 50 percent of the energy will still be, obviously green, molecules. So, given the overwhelming future supply of green electrons, there will be a huge demand for energy conversion and power-to-gas is the prime technology for this”, stated ERIG president Catrinus Jepma at its annual conference from 27th to 28th September 2017 in Brussels.
ERIG signs Memorandum of Understanding with Decarbonised Gas Alliance (UK)
On 9th of March 2017, the Decarbonised Gas Alliance (DGA) and the European Research Institute for Gas and Energy Innovation (ERIG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding setting up a framework for further cooperation in London. Both parties are determined to cooperate closely on joint projects that support the future role of gas in a decarbonised, secure and cost-effective energy system.
ERIG has set up a Hub session at this year’s European Utility Week (Gas and Power Energy Systems: Connecting Molecules and Electrons). The Hub Sessions are free to attend for all visitors.
European Utility Week is the premier landmark event in Europe for the entire utility sector, accumulating over 12.000 international smart energy stakeholders and 600 exhibitors. It is a 3-day business, innovation and information platform, facilitating networking and content sharing opportunities. The programme is developed to serve every level of the utility value chain. The event will take place 15-17 November 2016 in Barcelona and will have two new themes: Energy Revolution Europe and Intelligent Buildings Europe.
Eurogas Annual Conference - 27 October 2016, Brussels
ERIG will be represented by Catrinus Jepma at the Eurogas Annual Conference 2016. This year’s annual conference entitled “Gas innovation: gateway to a sustainable future” will address how gas can help transform the energy system to be low-carbon, efficient, renewable as well as flexible, customer-orientated and competitive. Catrinus Jepma will be part of Panel 1 “The role of gas in a holistic energy system”, the conference will take place on 27th October 2016 in Brussels. Successful ERIG Kick-off Workshop in Brussels together with Green Gas Initiative (GGI)
The first workshop of the energy research communities of the countries represented in the ERIG board met together with represents of Green Gas Initiative. The main objectives to Mobilize the high level research communities within the associated countries of ERIG and set the themes and challenges on which each ERIG working group will focus on as well as decide how to move forward with this in a short term was reached.

ERIG Network kick-off workshop to take place in Brussels
On the 1st September 2016 ERIG will arrange its first Network workshop event. Apart from interesting high ranking presentations there will be the opportunity to get to know ERIG as such and in the afternoon there will be in depth parallel workshops to the themes: “Smart Energy System”, “Renewable Gas”, “Small Scale LNG and “The North Sea – Gas meets Wind”. This is an opportunity to meet high ranking fellow research institutes and start collaborating on projects within the scope of ERIG. We are looking forward to meet with the invited ERIG community and special guests!
Offshore gas and wind sign manifesto for cooperation
During the "Gas meets Wind: North Sea Energy Symposium" in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, representatives from the gas and wind industry, together with NGO’s, grid operators and science sign on the 15th of June the Declaration of Coordination and Cooperation in the North Sea Energy Challenge to realise synergies between gas, wind and grid operators in the North Sea area to make the energy transition as sustainable and affordable as possible.

International Seminar on Gasification, Malmö, October 19-20,2016
The 9th International Seminar on Gasification by Energiforsk will cover R&D and industrial activities relating to different aspects of thermal gasification of biomass and waste, biofuels and power-to-gas applications.
This is a meeting place for professionals from the industry and the academia on an international level, with ample time for networking, in the breaks between sessions, as well as during and after the conference dinner.
The event series started already in 2007, with the aim to bring gasification stakeholders together to share experiences and views on thermal gasification to produce renewable electricity, biofuels and bio-methane. The program includes presentations from a handful of pioneering industrial biomass and waste gasification plants such as GoBiGas 200 GWh bio-methane plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, the 160 MW thermal input / 50 MW electrical output waste gasification plant at Lahti, Finland and the Enerkem Greenfield Alberta Biofuels plant in Edmonton, Canada.
Advance notice: Gas, wind and grid operators are to sign a ‘North Sea Co-Operation’ Manifesto during the North Sea Energy Symposium
In the framework of the Dutch presidency of the European Union, a symposium on smart offshore combinations between gas, wind and grid operators on the North Sea takes place during the Winddays on the 15th of June. The North Sea Energy Symposium is where energy specialists from North Sea countries will convene to discuss: how gas, wind and grid offshore operators may coordinate their activities; how to co-operate on addressing energy conversion, storage and transport; and how to collaborate in practice via joint projects. The symposium will address both the long-term perspectives for co-operation as well as short-term business opportunities. After a plenary session with three keynote speakers and round table discussions, the symposium concludes the signing of a Manifesto for ‘North Sea Co-Operation’ and a joint dinner with speeches from young professionals.
The North Sea Energy Symposium marks a first step in exploring collaboration on the North Sea between gas, wind and grid operators. With 200 energy specialists, representatives of the most important offshore stakeholders, relevant policy makers, experts and NGO’s, a step towards ‘North Sea Co-Operation’ is given shape. EU Awards € 18m to Fund STORE & GO Research Project
DVGW Coordinates EU Research Project on the Role of Gas Grid as Storage Medium for Renewables
The EU Commission will award a total of € 18m to fund the Horizon 2020 project on “Innovative Large Scale Energy Storage Technologies & Power-to-Gas Concepts after Optimisation” (STORE & GO), which is coordinated by the DVGW. This is enshrined in a financial backing agreement (Grant Agreement) that the European Commission has just signed with the project partners. The total budget of the research project, which is funded by 27 partners from six European countries, amounts to € 28m. Its objective is to further develop the natural gas grid into a storage medium and system integrator for renewable energies and test it by means of demonstration projects.
The project includes the presentation of three different power-to-gas concepts in Germany (E.ON plant in Falkenhagen), Switzerland (Solothurn) and Italy (Puglia), and will be complemented by accompanying research activities in the technological, economic and legal areas. One focus will be on the manufacture of renewable gases through methanation; another will be on investigating the potential integration of these gases into different power and gas grids for further transport and distribution. This way, renewable methane can be fed into the existing natural gas grid in a climate-neutral way without any restrictions, and can thus be made available for a broad range of applications. About 50 per cent of German homes are currently connected to the natural gas grid, which boasts a length of over 500,000km.
The DVGW manages the overall project through its research office at the Engler-Bunte-Institut of the Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie (KIT), and also coordinates all accompanying scientific research activities. Furthermore, the Association will communicate research results and design a power-to-gas roadmap. The project will run over four years and start in March 2016.
Prof. Dr. Catrinus Jetses Jepma first ERIG-President
Prof. Dr. Catrinus Jetses Jepma was elected first president of ERIG, the European Research Institute for Gas and Energy Innovation. Jepma chaired the Dutch gas innovation program Energy Delta Gas from 2010 to 2015, a 44 Mio. Research & Development program in the Netherlands to show the potential of gas in the future energy system. Catrinus Jepma has a background in economics and law and is university professor since 1988, holding a chair in energy and sustainability at the University of Groningen and in economics at the Open University, Heerlen.
Jepma has vast experience in energy policy and markets, environmental impact and policy issues, energy efficiency measures and energy technologies. He is listed as an author of more than hundred publications. Aside of his academic work, he guides policy makers and project developers regarding emissions trading projects, as well as in the areas of energy policy, renewable energy and energy system integration. As coordinating lead author within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1993 to 2007, he shared the Nobel Peace Price awarded to IPCC in 2007.

European network for gas and energy innovation founded in Paris
On the occasion of the World Gas Conference in Paris seven leading European research and development organizations have today established an innovative network to guide gas into the transition process towards a future renewable based energy system. With the signing of a cooperation agreement the new R&D network named European Research Institute for Gas and Energy Innovation (ERIG) will be promoting joint innovation and development work with the participation of research institutes and universities directly affiliated with ERIG members and other cooperation partners.

ERIG in short
In 2015 seven leading European technical and scientific organizations established a network to foster the role of gas and innovative gas technologies in the future energy system: ERIG – European Research Institute for Gas and Energy Innovation.
ERIG is a new European research and development network that will guide gas in the transition process towards a future renewable based energy system. It is a non-profit network for European cooperation in research and innovation in the field of sustainable and innovative gas technologies and the use of natural gas with renewable energies.
ERIG members represent national technical and scientific gas organizations and associations. It offers a unique platform that is directly linked to existing research and innovation structures in the member countries such as academic research facilities and universities as well as industry. The members represent in particular the new requirements of energy and gas in Northern/Western Europe.
The research portfolio of ERIG members covers all aspects from the production of gas through to gas utilization in different markets.
EU climate and energy policy is committed to an energyefficient and low-carbon economy. This is to be achieved by reducing greenhouse gases, raising the share of renewable energy and improving efficiency within the energy sector and industry in general.
Innovative approaches in terms of technical reliability, economic sustainability and safety are called for to achieve these goals. Within the overall structure of a sustainable energy supply system, it is becoming increasingly clear that an integrated systemic approach for the future energy system will be needed.
Gas and the gas infrastructure can play a major role in the future energy system.
Natural gas is the fossil fuel with the lowest specific carbon dioxide emissions. The highly flexible gas transport and distribution system along with innovative gas technologies can offer solutions that significantly reduce the total cost of transforming the energy system while simultaneously complying with carbon dioxide targets. For this reason, gas and the gas infrastructure should be given a more powerful voice in political and technical discussions.
What is ERIG about?
ERIG is a European Research and Development network. It aims to develop and demonstrate the role of gas in the transition process towards a future renewable-based energy system. The main fields of activity are:
- improving the efficiency of gas-related energy conversion processes in the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors,
- enhancing the safety, reliability and economic sustainability of the European gas infrastructure and gas storages, including LNG as a transportation fuel for long distances, on land, at sea and on inland waterways,
- enhancing the share of renewable and / or synthetic gases in the gas system, including renewable gas technologies,
- supporting the integration of volatile renewable power in the energy system through lexible gas options (power-to-gas, smart grids),
- improving the utilization of gas in highly efficient technologies (combined heat and power and multi-dual appliances),
- fostering life cycle analyses (LCA) and environmental impact analyses for all possible gases transported or distributed by the gas infrastructure,
- developing decision support systems and modelling tools to make the energy transition happen.
How does ERIG work?
ERIG supports innovation and research in the field of gas and gas technology by:
- promoting and analyzing joint innovation and research work with the participation of research institutes directly affiliated with ERIG members and other cooperation partners,
- supporting the EU’s strategic research agenda on energy and gas,
- disseminating the results to national and European institutions active in the political, scientific and public arena,
- transferring technology to national European economic institutions in academia, industry and the markets,
- pooling and communicating existing know-how,
- promoting cooperation with other European and international organizations in the energy and gas sector
